Prepare your voice before the booth door closes

A useful vocal day starts days before the mic. With fixed lyrics, a rested body, and a realistic song list, your hours in our iso booths translate into takes that need less rescue at mixing time.

Why prep protects studio time

In the booth, minutes matter: at Nobodyluno, headphone balance and mic choice usually take ten to twenty minutes before the first serious take. If lyrics, beat, and structure are still moving targets, budget disappears into rewriting instead of recording. Our live room is 42 m²; the 2 iso booths are built for dry vocals — not last-minute chorus edits.

Prepared artists get further on the same rates: from €85 per hour incl. 20 % VAT, or €320 for a four-hour block. If you only want a quick experiment without material, clarify scope via contact first so expectations match the clock.

Lock lyrics, beat, and references

Print lyrics or bring a PDF with breath marks. Note where doubles, ad-libs, or spoken tags belong. Deliver the beat as WAV without a master limiter; add BPM and sample rate so the engineer can set tempo in the control room.

Two reference tracks are enough: one for tone (“warm like track A”), one for placement (“lead closer like track B”). Skip hour-long playlists — they blur the brief. If backing parts still need writing, book extra time or a production day when arrangement is unstable.

Protect the voice the week before

Avoid shouting matches, unprotected arena gigs, and endless rehearsals without water breaks. Short regular practice beats one exhausted night before studio. If you are coughing or hoarse, reschedule early: cancellation is free up to 7 days before the slot under our terms, when we can rebook the room.

Persistent pain or loss of voice belongs with a clinician or voice coach — not in the booth. This is general guidance, not medical advice; it simply prevents paying for takes recorded on empty reserves.

Food, hydration, getting to Josefstadt

On session day, sip room-temperature water across the day, not only at the booth door. Skip dairy and very spicy food two to three hours ahead; eat lightly about two hours before start. Moderate coffee works for many voices — four espressos right before a take usually does not.

Nobodyluno is at Lerchenfelder Straße 14, 1080 Wien. Take U6 to Josefstädter Straße, then walk about 6 minutes along Lerchenfelder Straße toward the inner city to number 14. Alternatively tram line 5 to Lerchenfelder Straße/Neubaugasse, then a short walk. Hours: Monday to Friday 10:00–20:00, Saturday 10:00–16:00, closed Sunday. Allow time for tickets and stairs in the period building; arriving calm beats sprinting from the U6. Quick questions: 01 890 4523 or [email protected].

Warm up without burning takes

Start with shoulders, neck, and jaw — tension often lives there. Long “sss” or “fff” breaths, then gentle sirens and lip trills. Only then run song passages in mid range; high choruses come later when the voice is warm.

For rap and spoken word: consonants slow, then in flow. Ten to fifteen minutes is usually enough. In the booth, a water break beats ten strained repeats of the same verse. The engineer marks favorites live; you do not need to remember every pass.

In the booth: distance, cue mix, breaks

Keep pop-filter distance steady — about a hand’s width — and step back slightly on loud phrases. If you wear one earcup off, say so; we adjust levels to avoid leakage. Ask for a louder or quieter instrumental before pushing your voice: level fixes happen at the desk, not by forcing volume.

We have 24 mics available; the engineer picks two that fit your voice. After two focused hours, a short break is normal. Full-day blocks (€580 for eight hours) include pauses by default.

What we prep and what you leave with

Before you arrive we load the beat, set the grid, and line up headphone mixes. After the session you get named WAV files — comping on request within the same booking. We archive projects for 24 months, then delete per our privacy policy.

For mix and master next steps, clean filenames save money later. To plan spend, read planning your mix budget and book vocal recording with a realistic song count. A 30 % deposit holds the slot; we usually reply within 2 business days — use contact for timing questions.

Short checklist

  • Final lyrics, WAV beat, BPM noted
  • Two references with one sentence each
  • Rested, hydrated, light meal
  • 10–15 minutes warm-up before take one
  • Plan breaks; keep mic distance steady
  • Take exports home and back them up

Minimum booking age at our studio: 16 years. Unsure about scope? Message us via contact and we will sketch a flow that matches your material.
